Watching a Long Island Backyard
Begin with ten quiet minutes. Watch the edges of shrubs, the ground beneath feeders, and the highest open perches. Note the date, weather, time, species, number of birds, and behavior. A modest, consistent record becomes more useful than a long list made only once.
Keep food fresh, clean feeders regularly, provide shallow water, and plant native shrubs where birds can shelter. If a predator passes through, let the yard settle naturally.
